My music thoughts and similar topics.

Hello everyone! My name is Atticus Finch. I wanted to discuss one of my favorite bands of all time,  Pink Floyd. When I was younger, and before I even knew the band's name or the name of any of the songs, my father would play their music in our house whenever we would clean or just have family time. I have a lot of memories of spending quality time with my family, relaxing and enjoying myself, and having Pink Floyd play in the background. As I've gotten older, the variety of music that Pink Floyd has to offer and the overall tone of the music are really appealing to me whenever I want to relax or just have a good time. One of my favorite things about Pink Floyd is how they construct their music with strange tones and rhythms that are less common than something in a newer album from a pop star Or a hip-hop artist.

When I play Pink Floyd, I often Focus on the musical aspect of the song as opposed to the lyrical element because I always find myself discovering new and exciting things. One of my favorite songs, The Great Gig in the Sky, is not what most people would call a typical song because of the bizarre way the artists constructed it. This song has no words, but it does have a singer, and that's probably the most compelling part of this song because, through the rhythmic and musical elements paired with the fantastic performance of whichever singer they have at the time, you're able to experience a very layered complex and emotionally stimulating piece of art without the use of language. Sometimes, when I listen to the Great Gig in the Sky, I can just do homework or work at the gym without focusing on the words in the song because there are none.

Another one of my favorite songs from Pink Floyd is Welcome to the Machine. This song is bizarre not only in the vocals but also for me. Because my father enjoyed listening to Pink Floyd so much, the first song I ever heard was Welcome to the Machine after I was born. My mother often talks about how funny it is that my father picked this song after I was born, but it probably just made sense then. Recently, I broke my pinky, and I had to go to the hospital and be put under anesthesia so they could perform surgery to realign it. When I regained consciousness, this song was playing again, but it wasn't because someone else took it upon themselves to put it on. I had asked my mother to play it while I was starting to wake up, and I wasn't able to remember when I did so.  I thoroughly enjoy this song as well. Not only does it have some more dark tones, but it's also very stimulating for my brain with the different musical techniques the artists use When developing this music.

Now that I've talked about music that I enjoy listening to at any given point in the day, I'd like to talk about music that I don't ever want to hear during my day because it just does not suit me. I cannot listen to it in the car, in the gym, or while doing homework because it's just too distracting for whatever task I find myself doing. This would be any song written by or sung by Harry Styles. While many people have recently engaged in a craze about Harry Styles, I do not add to the hype. I don't enjoy his music, I don't enjoy how it's formatted, I don't think it's very stimulating, and it's pretty basic all around. When I listen to a piece of music, I listen to the instruments and the lyrics of the song, but I also try to understand the context of the song and better understand the artist through the art they produce. When I listen to Harry Styles, I don't connect with him, and I also don't connect with the music that he plays. I don't fully understand some of the messages in his songs, and I can't fully appreciate the music, and that's okay. I know many people enjoy Harry Styles's music, including my older sister, whom I admire; however, just because other people like something doesn't always mean that you have to like it as well or that it's even that good. Music means different things to different people, and that inevitably means that someone will not want a type of music that another person will just because music taste is something that you were not born with but grew to appreciate.

  1. Hey, Atticus! I have honestly never listened to Pink Floyd, but I’ve always wanted to get into it, so thank you for the song recommendations! Now I won’t feel bad when I start listening and getting Pink Floyd tee shirts.

  2. Hey, Atticus I have actually have listen to Pink Floyd before. I love the clothing, to say the least, I'm glad you choose someone who is not a generation. There are a lot of great talented artists from each generation.

  3. Hi Atticus, you have definitely changed my view of Pink Floyd. As "Welcome to the Machine" began to play, I thought it would be very loud and disturbing but as it went on, I could definitely see why you listen to it.

  4. Hey Atticus, I really liked this blog post because I am a huge pink floyd fan. I like that you included some pink floyd songs that are a bit different, and aren't the more namely popular ones like money, time, or comfortably numb. Songs like welcome to the machine and the great gig in the sky are super interesting to me because of how instrumental they are, and force you to make your own opinion of what the song could mean. Overall, great picks.

  5. Hey Atticus, I loved reading your blog post The Great Gig in the Sky is my favorite song by Pink Floyd its cool to see that its one of your favorites as well. I also agree it is a very emotional song but its something you can listen to whenever. I also liked the song Welcome to the Machine I had never heard it previously but I really enjoy it. I love how instrumental each song is and the vibe of them in general. I also agree with not liking the song Watermelon Sugar I believe it is way over played and just gets annoying during the chorus.

  6. Hello Atticus Finch, very nice of you to include one of the best bands of all time, Pink Floyd. I agree that their music is quite profound and unique. I liked your point on how Great Gig In The Sky is very "musical" on account of it having no lyrics. It's also kind cool that you were basically listening to Pink Floyd while you were high which is the way a lot of people tell you to listen to them (I do not condone this as a regular activity).
